PETALING JAYA
: A proposal to have the federal government underwrite the cost to upkeep and protect water catchment areas has been dismissed as unsustainable.
Instead, states should work together to find a win-win solution, according to an expert on water issues, and an economist.
Association of Water and Energy Research Malaysia president
S. Piarapakaran said any move by the federal government to provide financial support to a state to protect water catchment areas will prompt other states to make similar demands.
“In the end, what is going to happen to taxpayers’ money? Will it be used to pay for protecting such areas or for infrastructure development?”
Penang told not to divert subject on water issue with Kedah 19 May 2021 / 07:21 H.
ALOR SETAR: Penang has been reminded not to divert the issue of raw water charge claims by the Kedah government to seeking compensation from the Federal government to conserve the water catchment area in Ulu Muda.
Menteri Besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor said Penang, especially through the Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP), should stop issuing statements on the issue as the Kedah government would not budge from its decision to demand payment from the state.
“I asked for payment from Penang. I know that I need to ask for compensation from the Federal (government) but Penang has to pay for raw water, not the federal government,“ he told reporters after the PAS Kedah Palestinian Relief Fund contribution handover ceremony in Kota Sarang Semut near here, yesterday.
