KUALA LUMPUR: Deputy Minister of International Trade and Industry Datuk Jacob Dungau Sagan dismissed a suggestion on Wednesday, Oct 13 that high import and excise duties imposed were to be blamed for higher vehicle prices in Malaysia, claiming instead that prices were fixed by companies based on market considerations. "The reduction or elimination of import duties does not necessarily promise reductions in the price of vehicles as the prices are determined by companies and manufacturers based on market factors," Sagan told the Dewan Rakyat, in reply to a question from Chong Chieng Jen (Bandar Kuching-DAP). Sagan (Baram-BN) added that there were various factors coming into play to determine the pricing of vehicles, including component costs, exchange rate and transportation cost.
