Vaccine an effective public health intervention tool against Covid-19

12 Jul 2021 / 09:22 H. Bernama KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia should take a risk-based approach in the implementation of the National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme as it ramps up its vaccination drive, according to public health expert Datuk Dr Lokman Hakim Sulaiman. Dr Lokman Hakim, who is the professor of public health and Pro Vice Chancellor at the International Medical University, Kuala Lumpur, said to maximise the impact of the nation’s current vaccine supply, vaccination of the elderly population and people with comorbidities must be expedited. He said the vaccination drive should also zoom in on densely populated urban areas with a high level of economic activities. Since Covid-19 transmissions are highly localised, people living and working in such areas face a higher risk of infection, said Dr Lokman Hakim, who is also a member of the WHO Advisory Group for Pandemic Influenza Preparedness Programme.

Published on: Sunday, January 10, 2021 Text Size: Credit: acubiz.com.my WE the undersigned view with much apprehension and concern the current status of the Covid-19 outbreak in the country. Our national metrics paint a very bleak picture of Covid-19 pandemic management. Despite MCOs and other health interventions, the daily reported cases are not decreasing. The Cumulative Incidence Density (per 100,000 population) and the Infection Rate (active cases per 1,000 population) is not flattening, with the latest national Infection Rate registered at 0.879 per 1,000 population, meaning between 8-9 persons are actively infected for every 10,000 people. ADVERTISEMENT The testing positive rate (rolling 7-day average) is rising, registering 8.9pc on 3 Jan 2021, well above the WHO’s 5.0pc benchmark of effective pandemic control and containment.
