we ll leave it there. mayor gary perry of kitty hawk, north carolina. thank you. you re welcome. even if you do not live in north carolina, this storm is perhaps a very good reminder that we are at the beginning of hurricane season. the very beginning of hurricane season. it s important for everyone to be ready for a storm if and when the time comes. for more on that, i m joined by aton edwards, co-founder of the international preparedness network. good to see you, sir. so this one, again it looks like for all practical intents and purposes, we re going to be okay. but who is to say in terms of the next one how intense that might be. what do you need to be hurricane ready? well, you ve got to stock your home with the essentials. the things that you need to get through an emergency for a protracted period. i would say a week. a lot of people say 72 hours. i don t think so. i don t think that that s a wise thing to do because you want to be able to extend that time. so one of the
coastal areas in north carolina. this picture tweet out by jeff rogers in the say of avon. and here are some pictures tweeted out the weather change jim cantore. at times where jim was at, well, his satellite truck could not connect with the satellite and, therefore, became difficult for him to broadcast what he was seeing so he tweeted and worked out well in the indiana. wind and flooding is not the only dangers posed by hurricane arthur. the storm surges and rip tides representing a deadly threat to people in the water. rip tides are long narrow bands of water as you might know. they can pull swimmers away from shore and out to sea. the best way to escape a rip tied, not to swim directly in but to move parallel to the shore. joining us now to discuss how to stay safe in a storm like this is aton edwards director of the international preparededness network and ellen prager is also with us.

excitement in my life, but the fact is that it is 2011 and it is not 500 years from now and where maybe we can pinpoint these things, and we do the best we can with the best scientific evidence. thank you bryan norcross and aton edwards. the media of hurricane irene were overhyped we can put it down to the context of hurricane katrina in 2005. president bush sparked outrage when president bush looked out of air force one, and by contrast the look of president obama while on vacation when hurricane irene made landfall shows a commander in chief being briefed by officials. and again at the white house, he offered an update on the relief efforts. it will take time to recover from the storm of this magnitude and the effects are still being occurring across the country,
too good to resist which ultimately didn t live up to the expectations? well, it certainly lived up to my expectations. i think that anybody who studies hurricanes and studies hurricanes of the past, it has not happened in a long time, but as you read the history books of hurricane 1924, and 38 and not to mention gloria and bob and other hurricanes, and you see what those storms did to the coastline and to the infrastructure that existed a at this time, it was very easily and logical to take this hurricane and say, i don t see why if this hurricane stays within even reasonable downbount won t do a number of those things and indeed, it did. that is why we are having the record flooding and the storm surge at the coast, because that is what the hurricanes of the past did. and bryan, we remember of course that 35 people have lost their lives. aton, i want to come to you,
