4 Corners Is Being Slammed For Interviewing A Far-Right Extremist Again

4 Corners interview with Tarrio adds, other than the journalistic ‘clout’ of an exclusive interview. Journalist Natasha Mitchell pointed out that sitting Tarrio down automatically renders him a serious, normal subject with views worth receiving the fact he’s wearing a backwards cap and sunnies during the chat isn’t the catch-all 4 Corners seems to think it is. It’s also questionable why 4 Corners felt it necessary to fly to the US to cover the Capitol riots, given the pandemic, that it has been widely covered and interrogated elsewhere, and that there’s plenty to report on in terms of Australia’s own role in the rise of fascism in America.

What Role Did Social Media Play In The Capitol Riots?

Jason Howie / Wikimedia Commons Before extremists stormed the US Capitol, groups had been organizing and inciting violence on our most common social media apps.  This hour, how much of a role did social media play in that riot? Extremists had a home on the web long before the existence of Parler, an alternative social media network. Content moderation has only been used sporadically across the most popular social media, Facebook and Twitter. How should tech companies make sure their platforms are safe and content is moderated fairly?  Later, we talk about town hall meetings going virtual. Is the online town hall forum here stay?

QAnon and pro-Trump online forums are struggling and fracturing in aftermath of the U S Capitol siege

Law professor creates privacy-focused conference | The University of Kansas

Tue, 01/19/2021 LAWRENCE – A new conference created by a privacy law scholar at the University of Kansas School of Law aims to explore privacy beyond abstract concepts. Najarian Peters, associate professor at the KU School of Law, said the inaugural Privacy Praxis Conference will explore the broad spectrum of privacy expertise. The term “praxis” comes from the combination of theory and practice, Peters said. “When we think about privacy expertise, we’re saying that this is not just scholarship it is also inclusive of advocacy and community work that lives in the world,” Peters said. The conference will highlight expertise in privacy by academic scholars as well as those with expertise outside of the formal academy.

Why Tech Startups Need to Keep an Eye on the Future of Section 230

Image: Getty. Illustration: Chloe Krammel When Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act was enacted in 1996, the internet was a far smaller and friendlier place. The controversial law which frees online platforms of legal responsibility for most of the content that their users post passed amid the early days of the dot-com bubble, when many of today s tech giants were still young upstarts. Social media platforms Facebook and Twitter were years away from launching, let alone becoming the behemoths they are now. Section 230 played a big role in enabling the astounding growth of tech firms that rely on third-party content. Now, with calls to repeal the law coming from all over the political spectrum, it s fair to ask whether a startup in 2021 still could thrive without its protections.
