Fred is a pulitzer prizewinning journalist back from his days in the the boston globe, and im very pleased to be able to host him here today. Just a word on format, shortly im going to ask fred to give a few minutes describing the book and telling us a little bit about whats in it, then im going to take the opportunity to have a conversation, dig into a little bit more of the detail and explore some of the themes and what we might conclude from that, and then i will open it up to the floor to give you the opportunity to ask fred some questions. Well all to wrap up at 1 45. Thatll actually give us plenty of time to get into some quite interesting conversation. So without more ado, fred. Ms. [applause] im just going to spea
Did it start with the discovery of that 12story White Building on the outskirts of shanghai. No, in fact, it goes back all the way to the dawn of the internet itself. And in 1967 when the arpa net was about to go up, that was the precursor to the internet, that was, you know, a network where all the contractors at the Defense Department would be able to, you know, talk with one another in their computer programs. There was a man named willis ware. He was a computer pioneer. He was the head of the Computer Department at the rand corporation, and he was also on the Scientific Advisory board at the nsa. And he wrote a paper, it was secret at the time. Its been declassified, its a fascinating document. You can look it up. He said heres the thing, heres the problem. Once you create a Computer Network, once you have access from multiple, unsecured locations, youre going to create inherent vulnerabilities. Youre not going to be able to keep secrets anymore. What would happen if china joined us in the sanctions if were just thinking through and really did cut north korea off . How would north korea respond . Well, china has said that they support fully United Nations sanctions and i talked about some of the signs that the chinese are beginning to take unprecedented action in that direction, signalling to north korea they will pay a price if they dont come around in particular on the nuclear issue. This is why when we talk to the chinese we try to talk about how we can work in concert to bring pressure on tnorth korea in a surgical way. Were going to keep at that because we think increasingly the core chinese interests in stability on the Korean Peninsula and our core interest in security that these are converging concerns. And we are seeing signs for the first time in decades that the chinese also recognize this that their stability will be af
Because its the right thing to do but i cant. And i said i wouldve voted against it because it would help me politically but i cant. But everyone knew it was going to be listed. All of the rhetoric would take place, the accusations. But eventually we would vote to raise the debt ceiling as we always did. And it was amazing to me that eventually became such a critical issue that it could have resulted as the country going into default, an issue that the Previous Congress had been debated and people express themselves and they knew what they needed to do at the end and we are in a different kind of environment now.
