April showers bring flowers | Gardener State
Bruce Crawford
April is certainly behaving like April!
The temperatures fluctuate, but in general are cool and the showers have been ample. I actually enjoy the cooler temperatures and showers as it allows the flowers we have waited all winter to enjoy to last a few more precious days.
One plant whose flowers I particularly enjoy throughout wooded areas of North Jersey is bloodroot. Its flower buds are blushed with pink and remain closed on those rainy days, yet burst open with the sun, revealing a central boss of cheerful yellow anthers and clean white petals.
