A University of Iowa graduate student allegedly told police he drove recklessly past an officer twice because he was told to “swim like a fish”.
An Iowa City Police officer says he observed a BMW Mini-Cooper driving recklessly by swerving in and out of traffic near Clinton and College Streets in front of the Old Capitol Town Center just before 6:45 Saturday night. The officer initially stopped another vehicle, but the Mini-Cooper drove around the perimeter of the Ped Mall and returned, again driving by the officer recklessly. This time the officer conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle and allegedly detected the strong odor of ingested alcohol coming from the driver, identified as 26-year-old Daryl Irby of Pearland, Texas, a Houston suburb. Online records list Irby as a UI graduate fellow in marketing.
