Astronomers Peer Through the Fog at Milky Way s Supermassive Black Hole -- Is It Emitting a Jet Angled toward Earth?

    In 2019 astronomers lifted the veil on the monster black hole called Sagittarius A (Sgr A ) at the heart of our Milky Way Galaxy. Using computer modelling, astronomers  to simulated the material inside the thick cloud of plasma, dust and gas surrounding Sgr A .  The results pointed to the possibility of a relativistic jet coming from the supermassive black hole with an inclination that is aligned with Earth’s viewing point.  The Unveiling An international team of astronomers recently used an Interferometric technique which combines many telescopes to form a virtual telescope the size of Earth to map out the exact properties of Sgr A .  Using telescopes including the Atacama Large Milimeter/submilimeter Array (ALMA) in northern Chile, an image was produced with a resolution that allowed us to peer through the fog surrounding the supermassive black hole.

Data from 19 observatories released today promise to give unparalleled insight into this black hole and the system it powers, and to improve tests of Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity. “We knew that the first direct image of a black hole would be groundbreaking,” says Kazuhiro Hada of the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan, a co-author of a new study published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters that describes the large set of data. “But to get the most out of this remarkable image, we need to know everything we can about the black hole’s behavior at that time by observing over the entire electromagnetic spectrum.”
