people from the ash. there s lava bombs and cnn scott mcclain knows all about these. he s live in hawaii with the latest. what s happening, scott? reporter: so the biggest threat right now or at least the biggest thing that is on people s minds is that geothermal power plant. officials made quite clear yesterday that the site is secure at least for right now. those wells, they ve managed to pour cold water in them and the lava is still more than a mile away. things are safe in that department. some of these fissures continue to flare-up spewing a massive amount of lava into the air. others are starting to die down. like the fissure. the only fishure to cause an injury since kilauea started erupting. daryl clinton was hit by a lava bomb in the leg, a force so great that he knocked him off his feet. the lava bomb was so hot that it started his porch on fire. we caught up with him in the hospital yesterday. he is in surprisingly good
reporter: so daryl clinton just a day after we did that interview, he actually got hit with a lava bomb on his leg. the bomb was about the size of a bowling ball. he was just standing on his porch. he stopped paying attention for just half a second. luckily his ex-wife was there to take him to the hospital. she said that the heat of that lava bomb was so intense, john and poppy, that it seemed to cauterize the wound on his leg. it also started a fire on the porch. daryl clinton is in the hospital. he ll be there for six weeks. those two homes he was protecting are still standing. unbelievable. i keep wondering, can you feel the heat behind you where you re standing right now, scott? reporter: not from our vantage point but a few days ago when we were up closer, it s like putting your face up next to a camp fire. we re about half a mile away here. okay of the all right. scott, thank you for the reporting. i think it s a special kind
