Department of National Defense (DND) Secretary Delfin Lorenzana has defended the appointment of Major Gen. Bartolome Vicente Bacarro as the incoming commander of the Southern Luzon Command (SOLCOM) amid strong opposition from a House lawmaker who implicated the general to the death of a Philippine Military Academy (PMA) cadet in 2019.

Lorenzana said the appointment of Bacarro went through a “rigorous selection process” by the Armed Forces of the Philippines’ (AFP) Board of Generals where he was “found fit to assume higher position” in the military organization.
The AFP confirmed on Thursday, July 1, that Bacarro, the current commander of the 2nd Infantry Division (2ID), was appointed by President Duterte to replace Lt. Gen. Antonio Parlade Jr. as the commander of the SOLCOM upon the latter’s retirement on July 26.

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, December 10) The family of Darwin Dormitorio, the hazing victim who died inside the Philippine Military Academy in September 2019, has been fighting for justice for more than a year now. Some days are harder than others.
Early on Thursday, the family learned that Bartolome Vicente Bacarro, the commandant of cadets who resigned over the hazing controversy, has been promoted to the rank of major general. He was among the six senior officers of the Armed Forces of the Philippines whose nominations were confirmed by the Commission on Appointments on Wednesday.
“
Masakit talaga sa damdamin, nakakalungkot. Kung sino pa yung nagpabaya siya pa ‘yung nabigyan ng reward,” Dexter Dormitorio, Darwin’s brother, told CNN Philippines.
