Valley News - Forum, July 23: Ben & Jerry s caves to pressure from boycott movement

Published: 7/22/2021 9:59:57 PM Modified: 7/22/2021 10:00:06 PM Ben & Jerry’s caves to pressure from boycott movement Ben & Jerry’s, a company that prides itself on being a socially responsible business, has caved to anti-Israel pressure from within the “boycott, divestment and sanctions” movement (“Ben & Jerry’s to stop sales in Israeli-occupied lands,” July 20). It is a sad day for the company, for Israelis, for Palestinians, and for supporters of Israel, our steadfast ally and the only democracy in the Middle East. The boycott, divestment and sanctions movement is not truly interested in protecting Palestinians or any other group, but rather in systematically destroying the Jewish state. Recognizing the vacuous and hateful nature of the boycott, 35 states have to date passed laws, executive orders or resolutions designed to discourage boycotts against Israel. Valley News - Forum, July 11: Brutal changes on Dartmouth Row

Forum, July 11: Brutal changes on Dartmouth Row Published: 7/10/2021 10:00:05 PM Modified: 7/10/2021 10:00:06 PM Brutal changes on Dartmouth Row Dartmouth College architect emeritus George T. Hathorn’s Forum letter (“Dartmouth Hall plaza addition would ruin an iconic building,” July 4) points out another disingenuous bit of communication by the college administration, which has maintained all along that the exteriors of the buildings on Dartmouth Row would not be touched by the renovation now underway. But the plans show otherwise: A broad, elevated plaza across the front of Dartmouth Hall will cover much of the original foundation and steps, and what is best described as “farmhouse porches” will be added to Dartmouth and Thornton halls.

Valley News - Forum, July 4: As we celebrate July 4, we must take action for democracy

Published: 7/3/2021 10:00:05 PM Modified: 7/3/2021 10:00:05 PM As we celebrate July 4, we must take action for democracy Amid the fireworks and celebrations marking the Fourth of July, let’s pause and consider what the holiday commemorates: freedom for self-determination and avoidance of subjugation by the powerful. Yet, as of May 21, 14 state legislatures around the country, including New Hampshire, had passed 22 new laws making voting more difficult. And 61 other bills were moving through 18 other states. Even more dangerous than voter suppression, 24 laws in 14 states allow states to interfere in election administration and politicize the process. Through gerrymandering, massive amounts of money in politics and control of the courts, Republicans are trying to pick their voters instead of allowing voters to pick their leaders.
