SOUTH BEND â After Judge Peter Cahill read the juryâs verdict finding former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin guilty on all counts in the death of George Floyd, several people watching from South Bend summed up their feelings in one word: relief.
âEven a mixed verdict would have been problematic,â said Darryl Heller, director of the Indiana University South Bend Civil Rights Heritage Center and a member of the city s Board of Public Safety. âIt was a relief the jury took the evidence and came to that conclusion.â
Michael Patton, the diversity and inclusion officer for the city of South Bend, called it âa historic verdict and profound moment of justice.â
