Terrebonne Parish Council votes down attempt to restrict recreation districts
A proposed measure that would have temporarily barred rec districts in Terrebonne from making large improvements to their parks was rejected by the Parish Council Wednesday night.
The Council voted 6-3 against a proposed ordinance that sought to establish a moratorium on the purchase of immovable property by any recreation district until May 30.
The proposed ordinance was introduced by council member Jessica Domangue at the last regular meeting in March to address the potential restructuring of the Terrebonne Parish recreation districts recommended by the Recreation Modernization Task Force.
Domangue said during the meeting the proposed moratorium was designed to ensure the council can implement the recommendations if it chooses to without extra complications.
A key part of the effort to control flooding in Terrebonne Parish began operation Thursday.
The Petit Caillou Lock Structure in Chauvin includes a 56-foot lock that allows boats to travel along Bayou Little Caillou even when the tide is abnormally high. And its floodgates can be closed during storms or strong Gulf of Mexico tides to prevent water from rushing in and flooding nearby homes and businesses.
The structure, near Boudreaux Canal, will also help prevent saltwater from the Gulf from killing vegetation in surrounding freshwater swamps and marshes.
Construction, which began in October 2018 and took 515 days to complete, is part of the long-running efforts to help control flooding in Terrebonne, Parish President Gordon Dove said during a ribbon-cutting ceremony hursday.
Council votes to buy parking lot next to Terrebonne Government Tower
Terrebonne Parish will buy a parking lot at the corner of Barrow and Main Streets next to the Government Tower.
The parish currently leases the land, which contains 30 parking spaces, from HTV owner Martin Folse for about $42,000 a year. The issue sparked controversy last year when the lease was approved by the council.
The council voted unanimously Wednesday night to approve Parish President Gordy Dove s recommendation to purchase the parking lot for $430,000.
Newly elected council Chairman Darrin Guidry said the administration is working to complete the sale as quickly as possible.
