Work going well on £27m Carlisle s Sands Centre revamp

Works are progressing on a major refurbishment of Carlisle s flagship sports and events centre. Contractors are part-way through a significant refurbishment of the Sands Centre in Carlisle, which remains underway with extra measures in place to keep the site Covid-secure. The redevelopment of the Sands Centre, a Carlisle City Council building, is a major project for the local authority, set to cost more than £27m in total. City council members of business and transformation scrutiny panel are set to receive an update on the progress of the project on Thursday. A report prepared in advance by city council deputy chief executive Darren Crossley outlines the main milestones so far hit in the 98-week refurbishment project.

Works progressing on major Civic Centre redevelopment project

A MAJOR project to renovate one of Carlisle s most recognisable buildings is gathering pace. Works are currently ongoing to realise a redesign of the ground floor of the Civic Centre, a major landmark in the city centre and the home of Carlisle City Council. The council s business and transformation scrutiny panel was provided with an update on the progress of the works, at its meeting at the end of last week. As part of the £3.6m renovation and redevelopment works, a brand new entrance and reception area and customer contact centre will be created, as well as a new council chamber and open meeting space for council staff and others. Office units will also be created as part of the works for use by potential new partners .

REPAIR PLANS: The water feature in Bitts Park was damaged by flooding Plans have been published that would see a popular feature of Bitts Park repaired following flood damage sustained earlier this year. Carlisle City Council s executive will consider on Monday plans to carry out repairs to the childrens interactive water feature in Bitts Park, close to the city centre. The interactive water feature, a major part of the childrens play area located in Bitts Park, sustained considerable damage to its electric and mechanical systems in February. This damage was brought about by the flooding caused by Storm Ciara on February 9, which caused the Rivers Eden and Caldew to burst their banks significantly.
