Man remanded in custody over Good Friday holdup

A man who admitted to robbing an elderly shopkeeper of a small amount of cash in an armed holdup on Good Friday was remanded in custody upon his arraignment on Monday.  Rosario Costa, a 38-year old Sicilian living at Marsascala, was tracked down by police through footage shot by a CCTV system installed at the Marsascala self-service store.   The 70-year old shopkeeper put up some resistance when the intruder held him at knifepoint at 8pm.  The victim was injured in the ensuing struggle and his injuries were later certified as grievous by a doctor at the Paola health centre.  The suspect thief was escorted to court on Monday, pleading guilty to aggravated theft, holding his victim against his will, grievously injuring him, unlicensed possession of a knife as well as relapsing.

Mobile phone localisation places man at the site of arson

A man who earlier this year allegedly harassed his former girlfriend and threatened to plant a bomb in her car was back in court on Thursday after mobile phone localisation placed him in Senglea at the time that the woman’s car was set on fire last December.  Omar Djelassi, a 23-year old Cospicua resident, was charged with damaging the woman’s car as well as another car parked nearby and the façade of a residence on the night of December 16. He was also accused of harassing and threatening the woman and her mother, threatening them through phone calls and messages, causing them to fear violence as well as breaching previous bail conditions.
