Frieze New York is a sold-out event this year, but prospective visitors who find themselves tantalisingly ticketless can still see some free augmented reality (AR) artworks around the premises of The Shed in Hudson Yards. The non-tangible, mobile phone-powered exhibition

The show is on view outdoors and inside the fair for those who scored a ticket. It has been curated by the digital medium studio Acute Art and spearheaded by its artistic director, Daniel Birnbaum, and The Shed’s chief curator Emma Enderby.

This was also the first art fair in New York since the pandemic hit 14 months ago. Held at the Shed in Hudson Yards, it reflected the changing times: timed tickets, temperature checks, health screenings. Those who didn’t comply were turned away. Early VIPs included museum directors Thelma Golden and Richard Armstrong, Christie’s C.E.O. Guillaume Cerutti and Miami-based collector Mera Rubell.
Winkelmann’s first impression of the fair was a mix of puzzlement and excitement.
“The art fairs I’ve been to are usually in a parking lot, with people selling things for $20 or $30. Things like nature pictures. Where I live, no one cares about art.”

I was bound to get a couple of things wrong last time, on the tech side anyway but thankfully most denizens of the art world aren’t savvy enough in that regard (yet) to have attacked me for it, as they are wont to do. The art part of NFTs don’t live on the blockchain, but rather on the InterPlanetary File System (IPFS, see glossary), which is a peer-to-peer computer network for storing and sharing data in a distributed fashion. There are many potential problems on the horizon for which no ready answers seem to exist. What if the IPFS is hacked, or the businesses running them somehow go under? Could there be NFTs shorn of their art? (some would say that’s the case already!) One DM-er complained that they couldn’t find any details relating to the technical requirements for image resolution sizes (there are none) and whether TIFF files are the best format because they are the most stable (probably yes, but anything goes as of now).
