Michael Kelley died in October 2020 after a 22-month battle with stage IV head and neck cancer. His family and friends are supporting further research at Providence Cancer Institute where he received care. The institute has announced the Michael Kelley Endowed Chair for Cancer Research. Kelley, a successful attorney, father of four and grandfather of three, was a long-time supporter of non-profit organizations and Catholic high school education and sports. Cal State San Marcos decision to honor former president criticized by students

Print Officials at Cal State San Marcos plan to add the name of their recently retired president to a university institute that is already named after the well-known philanthropist Darlene Shiley and some students are less than pleased. The name change, which is expected to take effect later this year, was actually agreed to two years ago, when Shiley and the university first reached an agreement to name the CSU Shiley Institute for Palliative Care in the donor’s honor, officials said. “At the time, it was the wish of Mrs. Shiley to also acknowledge Karen Haynes in the naming following the requisite two-year period post-retirement for an individual who has served the CSU in an administrative capacity,” spokeswoman Margaret Chantung said in an email.

Alzheimer s Research Alliance Gets $7M Grant To Advance Studies

(Shutterstock / Tashatuvango) SAN DIEGO, CA An alliance of local research institutions announced Wednesday the National Institute on Aging has awarded it $7.46 million in federal grants to advance research to combat Alzheimer s disease. The funds are headed to Collaboration4Cure, an alliance of top research institutions brought together by San Diego County and Alzheimer s San Diego. C4C grew out of the work of The Alzheimer s Project, a regional effort to address a rise in local cases of dementia, the region s third-leading cause of death after cancer and heart disease.
