Schoonover Observatory reopens By Sam Shriver - sshriver@limanews.com Michael Ritchie, president of the Lima Astronomical Society, leads a discussion over the weekend on the Dark Skies Initiative at the Schoonover Observatory. LIMA The Lima Astronomical Society opened its Schoonover Observatory over the weekend for an open house and discussion on the Dark Skies Initiative. “It’s been over a year,” said Michael Ritchie, Lima Astronomical Society president. “It’s (the closure has) really done a lot of harm to the observatory. I had to come out and re-clean everything, but we’re finally back open.” Ritchie says they are limited in what they can do because repairs are needed.

County supports several House bills

Wednesday, March 31, 2021 During its Tuesday meeting, the Hays County Commissioners Court expressed support of many proposed bills in the 87th regular session of the Texas Legislature, including one that would create a new District Court for the county.  The commissioners await more details of the legislation before writing resolutions of support, but expressed general support of several.  House Bill 37 would establish a public routing process for oil and gas pipelines, requiring companies to go through the same process that governmental entities follow for roads and powerlines. A public routing process would provide landowners with a greater voice and help ensure that the process is fair for all parties.

February 19, 2021 Cape May-Lewes Ferry updates travel restrictions The Cape May-Lewes Ferry will allow bicyclists and foot passengers again with capacity restrictions, starting Monday, Feb. 22. According to a Feb. 18 press release, all bicyclists and foot passengers must have a reservation, are required to check in at the ticket counter prior to boarding, and must arrive at least 45 minutes before departure time. The passenger salon aboard the vessels will also be open; however, inside seating capacity is currently limited to about 20 percent. Passengers must wear face masks and stay socially distanced from anyone not in their traveling party. They are urged to pay attention to onboard directional signage to help control the flow of traffic on the vessel. Masks are required in the terminals, on board the vessels, and in outdoor areas while on terminal grounds. Exterior seating is open to all passengers. Fort Worth to Consider Protections for Migratory Birds

Fort Worth city council members will hear a proposal on Tuesday to consider measures that could prevent the deaths of scores of migratory birds. A representative of Lights Out Texas and the Dark Skies Initiative will address a council work session to discuss ways that the downtown business community can reduce light pollution during the overnight hours in the spring and fall. As many as one billion migratory birds travel through Texas – 1 in 3 of all birds that migrate south for the winter through the United States – every year, and an untold number of them are killed when they crash into buildings, according to conservationists.
