Jersey City is fighting violent crime with a multi-pronged strategy, but the state’s second largest city could use some help from judges and the criminal court system, Public Safety Director James Shea says.
“One homicide victim had 4 previous gun arrests, another one had two previous gun arrests,” Shea said during an interview about the city’s homicide rate in 2020. “The next one had three robbery arrests; the next one had three gun arrests and a murder arrest.”

The third man charged in the murder of a 17-year-old Jersey City girl in April refused to appear Thursday at his detention hearing for the second time this week and was ordered detained through his prosecution.
Hudson County Superior Court Judge Joseph Isabella adjourned Tuesday’s until today after a corrections officer said Jeremy Perez, 22, of Jersey City, would not appear for the livestreamed hearing. The judge had less patience 48 hours later and proceeded with the hearing without Perez.

Jersey City fatal shooting under investigation
The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit is investigating a Dec. 10 fatal shooting.
On Dec. 10, Jersey City police officers responded to the area of Martin Luther King Drive and Wilkinson Ave., where they found an unconscious 35-year-old Jersey City man, later identified as Niles Holmes, with apparent multiple gunshot wounds.
He was pronounced dead at 6:12 p.m.
A Jersey city man, 24, sustained two graze wounds to the arm.
No arrests have been made at this time.
