New Church shelter in Żejtun for survivors of abuse and their children

A new shelter for survivors of abuse and their children has been opened by the Church in Zejtun, replacing another one in Santa Venera. Il-Milja, housed at Dar Ġesù Nazzarenu Zejtun, was inaugurated by Archbishop Charles Scicluna and will be run by the Church through Fondazzjoni Sebħ. It will be offering protection to survivors of domestic violence, human trafficking, forced abortions, and forced prostitution, among others. The shelter is equipped with modern facilities including therapy rooms, and will be able to cater for 12 families, up from nine at the previous shelter Dar Qalb Il-Ġesu. “Three years ago I remember the residents and workers were finding it difficult to come to terms with leaving the shelter at Dar Qalb il Ġesu,” said Fondazzjoni Sebħ director, Yvonne Mallia.

The inauguration held on Mother’s Day was presided over by Archbishop Charles Scicluna. Il-Milja, a second stage shelter which will be run by Fondazzjoni Sebħ, will welcome women who have experienced abuse or violence including victims of domestic violence, victims of human trafficking, women forced into prostitution or forced to have an abortion. The second-stage shelter includes 12 apartments which will welcome a total of 36 individuals and is located within Dar Ġesù Nazzarenu in Żejtun. Church.mt/photos
