Wisconsin firm to rehab White Mill

May 10, 2021 DANVILLE, Va. – The Alexander Company of Madison, Wisconsin plans to “put the lights back on at the White Mill.” Development project manager Dave Vos said the the $62.5 million project will begin with 150 apartments, 25% of which will be reserved for workforce housing for teachers, public service workers and others strapped by housing needs and high rental costs. There will be 110,000 square feet of commercial space, 150 apartment units initially with plans for an additional 100 apartments in the future. The project is scheduled for completion in the summer of 2023. The Alexander Group will also restore the covered bridge that spans the Dan River and which was once used by Dan River workers to shuttle between mill buildings. The covered bridge will be restored as a pedestrian walkway.

City announces deal to redevelop White Mill

DANVILLE, Va. — Mayor Alonzo Jones joined with other local officials today in officially announcing a project partnership to redevelop the iconic White Mill building on Memorial Drive into a multi-use project that initially will feature 110,000 square feet of commercial space and 150 apartments. Another 100 apartments are planned in a future phase. The joint venture between the Danville Industrial Development Authority and The Alexander Company includes other key components, including: an easement over approximately 1.12 acres of land fronting the Dan River for the extension of the Riverwalk Trail, plans to use the canal on the south side of the building as a whitewater feature,

Danville City Council approves utility rate adjustments

DANVILLE, Va. — On a recommendation from the Danville Utility Commission, the city’s rate consultant and city staff, Danville City Council approved the adjusting of utility rates for the city’s utility customers. Following the completion of a 2021 biennial rate study, proposed adjustments will go into effect on July 1. These changes include net decreases to electric and gas rates. The water and wastewater rate adjustments included will have a neutral impact to customers.  A cost of service study determined the rate structures for the next two fiscal years, which will cover the cost of supply and maintenance to utility infrastructure.

IDA approves extension of purchase option for White Mill

During their meeting Tuesday, Danville’s Industrial Development Authority approved and authorized the extension of a purchase option for the White Mill, located at 424 Memorial Drive, to the Alexander Group. This extension for 90 days, according to Danville Economic Development Director Corrie Bobe, is to allow the company to finish its due diligence on the property. The option was originally granted on June 12, 2019 and expired on March 8. Now, the company has until June 6 to decide whether to proceed with the purchase. The Alexander Company is a Wisconsin-based developer specializing in historic preservation, urban revitalization and adaptive reuse. In 2019, the purchase option was granted to them for $3 million, which is the same price the IDA bought the property for from White Mill Development LLC in 2017.
