A virtual visit to Italy

Carmen De Lorenzo demonstrating making pizza dough. Photo by Jordana Hatab. When organizations come together to share international experiences with youth and families, educational programs are successful. Youth and families across the state of Michigan registered for an Italian Virtual Day in spring of 2021. Over 100 registered participants had the opportunity to enjoy actively learning how to make Italian pizza dough live, learning some Italian history, creating a craft, learning Italian language throughout the session and moving to popular Italian music. If you were unable to attend this cultural event, please view the recording at the Michigan State University Extension4-H Global and Cultural Education resource website.

The Tom Favia Memorial Gymnasium - Hudson Reporter

The Tom Favia Memorial Gymnasium The Tom Favia Memorial Gymnasium Dear Editor: The Dante Alighieri Society firmly maintains that Tom Favia should be recognized for his significant contributions to scholastic sports and public education. Consequently, we would like the James J. Ferris High School gym designated as the “Tom Favia Memorial Gymnasium.” Thomas J. “The Turk” Favia passed away on September 28, 2018. He was an educator, basketball coach, “dean,” and union leader par excellence. Before stepping down as president of the Jersey City Education Association (JCEA) in 2012, Tom Favia had dedicated nearly six decades of his life toward the betterment of the Jersey City School District.

Don t Trivialize Columbus - Hudson Reporter

Hudson Reporter Dear Editor: The New York City Department of Education took a giant step backwards when it re-designated Columbus Day as “Italian Heritage Day/Indigenous Peoples Day.” This endeavor simply represents the latest effort to eliminate Columbus Day. When one thinks about it, Columbus Day is a holiday for everyone; it is not just an “Italian thing.” Throughout the years, Italian-Americans, Hispanics, and other groups have embraced this holiday as an occasion to celebrate and commemorate their culture and ethnic heritage. The voyages of Christopher Columbus represent a tremendous human achievement. Collectively, they symbolize a documented “first encounter.” For many, the journeys of Christopher Columbus epitomize the voyages of – and to – freedom and a better life. Columbus has been an endearing and enduring inspiration to all immigrants: People from far-away lands who possess the courage and determination to take a chance by coming to the New World
