The Northern Territoryâs business lobby group is mourning the loss of new jobs that would have been created by a now-scrapped giant Dan Murphyâs liquor store in Darwin.
Greg Ireland, chief executive of Chamber of Commerce Northern Territory, said he understood why Woolworths made the decision but raised concerns that it may affect the territoryâs reputation as a place to do business.
âWe are perhaps disappointed from a local jobs opportunity perspective,â Mr Ireland said.
â[Dan Murphyâs] was an anchor tenant so there is more than one business impacted by this decision.

There is concern the COVID-19 vaccine may be refused in remote Northern Territory communities after a mammoth effort to get it there.
Gurindji man Charlie King told ABC Radio Darwin he identified some resistance when he brought up the topic in an unnamed community. There s some people saying simply, We re not going to do it , because they don t understand how serious this virus is, he said.

GDA chairman Helen Secretary said Dan Murphy s had been consulting with them for three years and residents in Kulaluk and Minmarama supported the project. I feel that the people from the rest of Australia that s objecting to this have no right to speak for us, she said. These are our lands. Darwin is Larrakia land, and we are the Traditional Owners of this land. We have our own voice in regards to how our future goes in our community for our people and what concerns we have.
