Escazú Agreement Enters into Force in Latin America and the Caribbean on International Mother Earth Day
The States Parties to the Regional Agreement on Access to Information, Public Participation and Justice in Environmental Matters in Latin America and the Caribbean - known as the
Escazú Agreement - celebrated the treaty s entry into force this Thursday, April 22, on precisely the same date on which International Mother Earth Day is commemorated.
Having reached the required number of ratifications on January 22, 2021, in accordance with the conditions stipulated under Article 22, all of the Escazú Agreement s provisions go into effect as of today. To date, 24 countries in the region have signed the accord and 12 have already ratified it, becoming States Parties to the treaty.

Representatives of the signatory countries to the Regional Agreement on Access to Information, Public Participation and Justice in Environmental Matters in Latin America and the Caribbean – known as the Escazú Agreement – began their second work meeting with a call to work together, strengthening multilateralism and cooperation to defend people’s fundamental access rights and to foster sustainable development in the region, in line with the goals of the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda.
At the Second Meeting of the Signatory Countries to the Escazú Agreement, which is being held virtually this December 9-10 under the auspices of the Government of Antigua and Barbuda, the representatives of the 24 Latin American and Caribbean nations that have already signed the treaty will continue analyzing the topics to be addressed at the first meeting of the Conference of the Parties, along with strategies and partnerships for the Agreement’s prompt entry into force and impl
