A man shot in the head and chest 11 years ago in an attempted gangland murder has been jailed for four years, after admitting possessing a homemade gun and 88 rounds of ammunition last year.
Daniel Philips (30), with an address at Crecora Avenue, BallinacurraWeston, Limerick, received a 5½-year sentence with the final 18 months suspended, at Limerick Circuit Court on Thursday.
In the year since, everything has changed, writes Tristan Stewart-Robertson. Schools have been closed for much of the past 12 months. Businesses have shut permanently, temporarily, or adjusted to face masks, social distancing and queues. Public finances have been crippled as the infamous “money tree” has seeded an entire forest to support individuals and businesses forced to stay at home. And there has been unimaginable loss. A total of 220 people have died where Covid-19 is recorded on death certificates. Thousands more have been infected but survived everything from mild to severe symptoms. Even more might have had the virus but never know.

The ice is hanging around and many are hunkering down at home as temperatures stay below freezing on Monday.
Over 11,000 residents are still without power. Iberia, Vermilion, St. Martin and St. Mary has the most outages reported due to the weather as of 10:00 a.m.
DOTD says that crews have been out on the roads in the state. Preparations began days earlier as crews put down salt to combat thick ice accumulation. Deidre Druillhet with DOTD says the winter weather was stronger than what they expected and roadways have been hit hard. They asks that if people do not need to be out, they should stay off the roadways.
