It was a big night for housing in Saugeen Shores as the Town’s planning committee approved removing barriers that impede construction of affordable housing – housing that costs less that 30 percent of a households’ income.
The planning committee, meeting virtually via Zoom June 21, approved town-wide zoning bylaw changes, including allowing six-storey buildings in the core of Port Elgin.

Concerns about increased traffic, safety, noise and light pollution, environmental harm, and land use were raised by four residents – and partially echoed by several councillors – during a virtual public meeting May 25, via Zoom, on Town plans to create a business park on 35 acres of its vacant land on Concession 6 at the south end of Port Elgin.

A landowner who threatened to donate his property at the south end of Port Elgin to a nature conservancy if permission for a new lot was denied, received a rezoning allowing construction of a house and 7.9 metre detached garage from the Town of Saugeen Shores planning committee following a public meeting May 17. In March, Bruce County’s Land Division Committee – against the advice of staff – approved a 1.1 acre lot severance for Tom Fenton on the south side of Bruce Road 25, west of Highway 21.
At the planning meeting, held via Zoom, Bruce County senior planner Daniel Kingsbury noted the file had a “bit of a history” beginning in 2017 with a severance application.
