The foundations of Lance Martin’s property in Hemsby, Norfolk, were first undermined by the Beast from the East in 2018 – which, he said, caused almost 100ft (30m) of sand dune to disappear – and more recently harsh winds on Easter Sunday have further taken a toll. The 63-year-old estimated that he lost up to 20ft from the bottom of the dune and more than 6ft from the top over the bank holiday.

Search continues for man missing in the Norfolk Broads

Hemsby Broads Rescue, along with the fire service, search and rescue helicopters, police, Broads Beat and Winterton, Lowestoft and Gorleston Coastguards were tasked with finding Simon Tait, a 38-year-old from Surlingham, near the Beauchamp Arms on the River Yare last night. He was last seen at an address in Surlingham at 6.53pm on Tuesday, and is described as being medium build, 5.8ft tall and wearing light-coloured cargo trousers and a green army-style t-shirt. He has short brown hair, blue eyes and stubble.

The man who spotted the tunnels on the dunes between Hemsby and Winterton on Wednesday said he was not only concerned the dangerous practice was weakening them  - but that the person doing the digging could have been buried alive. Hemsby Lifeboat coxswain Daniel Hurd said the individual was right to be worried and that the activity was an absolute no-no . He said: I want to stress that nobody should be digging into the dunes whatsoever, at any time.
