Four Lobo scholarship players each of whom has started games this season did not make the trip to Fort Collins for Wednesday night’s final game of the regular season against Colorado State, leaving the team’s game roster with six scholarship players and four walk-ons.
UNM, whose head coach Paul Weir announced his resignation on Friday but remains the coach through the end of this season. UNM has not indicated whether the four are hurt, being disciplined, quit the team, why they are not on the trip or if they are expected to play in next week’s Mountain West Tournament.

In a season of struggles, every glimpse of promise seems to be something worth delving into for the Lobos.
On Saturday, in a 65-55 loss to Fresno State the 11th league loss of the season for the Lobos (5-11, 1-11 Mountain West) sophomore guard Kurt Wegscheider had his starting job of the previous three games taken away.

Even before UNM’s sometimes-excruciating 77-53 loss Monday night at Boise State – the largest conference-opening loss for the Lobos since 1993 at Utah in the old Western Athletic Conference – it was apparent that scoring would be difficult this season.
The roster lacks outside shooting, which, in an oversimplified way, allows opposing defenses – Monday that meant a Boise State defense that is likely one of the best UNM will play all season – to sag into the paint, clogging up driving and passing lanes and making scoring near the rim very hard for new UNM big men Bayron Matos and Valdir Manuel.
