Roma lose Spezia cup clash 3-0 after substitute mix-up

Roma were handed a 3-0 Italian Cup defeat to Spezia on Friday after they made six substitutions during a chaotic last 16 clash they had already lost earlier in the week.
Paulo Fonseca s side were eliminated on Tuesday after a 4-2 extra-time defeat at the Stadio Olimpico, which they finished with nine-men after initially recovering from an early two-goal deficit to take the match beyond 90 minutes.
The capital city club were down to nine less than two minutes into extra time after Gianluca Mancini and goalkeeper Pau Lopez were both dismissed, and in the aftermath of the second red card brought on Daniel Fuzato and Roger Ibanez to take their total of subs over the allowed maximum of five.

After resting some of his big names for Wednesday’s midweek fixture against bottom of the table Crotone, Paulo Fonseca will have almost all of his big guns available this weekend. The return of Leonardo Spinazzola, along with Edin Dzeko escaping a minor muscle scare this week, means that Fonseca will only be without Pedro and Antonio Mirante of his regular starters, neither of whom have been guaranteed starters lately.
Fans of Lorenzo Pellegrini in a more advanced role won t be dismayed at Pedro s inability to recover in time for Sunday’s match. Additionally, Mirante has been less than secure in big matches this season, so Pau Lopez may well have been given the nod regardless. Other than Pedro and Mirante, only part-time players Davide Santon, Federico Fazio, and Riccardo Calafiori remain out.
