Eothen “Egon” Alapatt was out on a bike ride in Big Sur, California on New Year’s Eve when the news broke that Daniel Dumile, the rapper who performed as MF DOOM, had died two months earlier. Dumile’s death set off shock waves in the music community; but for Alapatt, who put together one of Dumile’s most celebrated and critically acclaimed projects the 2004 collaboration with beloved, equally elusive hip-hop producer Madlib known as Madvillain the loss was personal.

When MF Doom released
Operation: Doomsday in 1999 (and the split EP with MF Grimm on Brick Records), the record’s complex significance blew my mind. It demanded my scrutiny. I came to think of the MF Doom character and Operation: Doomsday as an alchemical equation that solved the twin tragedies of losing his brother and closest collaborator, as well as having their record,
Black Bastards, killed by Elektra Records. Surely KMD would have received big fame if they hadn’t caught the stray bullet of cultural racism. And yet, without such affront, the circumstances that birthed the Supervillain would have been otherwise.

Petition Pushes To Name New York Street After MF DOOM
MF DOOM quietly passed away on Halloween of last year. However, his wife did not officially announce his death until December 31st. His death came as a shock wave to fans and friends of the influential British-American artist. Since then, a petition is being pushed to name a New York Street after the iconic rapper.

KMD-MF DOOM Way Committee has requested that Long Beach City Council rename a block in Long Beach after the late rapper. The block the committee aims to change is between Riverside Boulevard and Long Beach Road on East Hudson Street. This may be because MF DOOM, whose real name is Daniel Dumile, grew up in the city.

MF DOOM is gone but not forgotten. A request has been filed to make an intersection in Long Island, NY a tribute to Hip-Hop’s only true supervillain.
As spotted on
Hypebeast, a petition has been created to honor the late great MC. Reportedly, professor and Long Beach, NY native Dr. Patrick Graham, has formally requested that the East Hudson Street block between Riverside Boulevard and Long Beach road be changed to “KMD-MF DOOM Way”. This is the area where the “Rapp Snitch Knishes” rapper grew up.
“Hip-hop leaders credit Mr. Dumile as one of the most prolific rap artists of all time. His life served as an example of inclusive community building and growth through individual struggle. Long Beach profoundly influenced his adolescents,” the petition reads. “Mr. Dumile represents the ability to grow through tragedy and unite people around common themes. We need more individuals like him during this time of political and social divisions. Mr. D
