The leadership of the New York City Police Department faced stiff questioning at a City Council budget hearing Tuesday over its handling of protests, overtime spending and an increase in shooting incidents, leading to angry outbursts from both council members and top NYPD brass.
In one tense exchange, the chair of the council’s finance committee, Daniel Dromm, reprimanded NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea for spending on overtime pay for officers. NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea was grilled Tuesday in a City Council budget hearing.
They clashed on several issues, including overtime spending and last year’s George Floyd protests.
As CBS2’s Andrea Grymes reports, one councilman went head-to-head with the commissioner.
“I don’t feel safe oftentimes around police officers,” Queens Councilman Daniel Dromm said.
Dromm did not mince words, quickly challenging Shea.
The fireworks started almost immediately in the City Council hearing on the NYPD‘s proposed budget.

This year, the NYPD s budget is actually increasing. In this budget the mayor s office either reversed or simply did not implement many parts of the budget deal that were reached for the fiscal 2021 adopted budget, said City Council member Daniel Dromm.
He is focusing on overtime. The NYPD is already over-budget this fiscal year, with two months to go.
