Here s a parlour game for wine lovers. Imagine you want to make a world-class cabernet sauvignon. Presuming money is no object, where on the planet would you plant or buy vines? Bordeaux? You could spend a long time discussing where in Bordeaux. Napa will probably come up; maybe also Chile.
It s unlikely many will think of Paso Robles in California. But that s where Daniel Daou and his brother Georges ended up founding Daou Vineyards. After an extensive eight-year search for prime cabernet sauvignon territory - which took in Spain, Argentina, Tuscany, Napa, everywhere , in 2007 they bought a property high on a mountainside (it s at 2,200ft) and 14 miles from the cool Pacific Ocean. The plan: to make a wine that would rank alongside their favourite bordeaux, Château Léoville Las Cases.
