ODOT spends millions per year picking up trash on Ohio’s highways Eileen McClory © Provided by Dayton Daily News ODOT crews pick up trash along I-75 in Moraine on Friday, March 12. CONTRIBUTED People who throw fast-food cups and other trash out of their car window onto the side of the highway cost taxpayers millions of dollars each year. The Ohio Department of Transportation spends about $4 million per year on average picking up around 400,000 bags of trash from along Ohio’s roadsides. “This money could be better spent if people would simply keep trash in their vehicle and secure items they are hauling,” said ODOT spokesman Matt Bruning. “There is zero excuse for litter ending up along Ohio roadsides.”
