The long-awaited 23rd
Rhythm & Roots Music, Dance and Food Festival will resume Sept. 3-5 at Ninigret Park with much-loved headliners, a jam band extravaganza, festival fan favorites and new voices that reflect the always-changing nature of roots music.
The headliners – Rhiannon Giddens & Francesco Turrisi, John Hiatt and Uprooted – will join Richard Thompson, Trigger Hippy, the Pine Leaf Boys and many, many others covering a vast range of musical styles – Cajun, R&B, Delta blues, zydeco, soul, country, rock and gospel among them.
About 80% of the artists who were scheduled for last year’s festival, prior to its cancelation, are back. Chuck Wentworth, whose family-run Lagniappe Productions produces the Labor Day weekend festival, says fans “kept the vibe alive” last year and are eager to get their three-day musical fix. Guitar strums sounded over crowds of dancing festival-goers on Saturday, soaking up live music at a GrassRoots festival weekend that nearly went dark for the second year in a row.
Children chalked rainbows onto the Trumansburg Fairgrounds concrete as others lined up behind them to paint a mural. Parents swayed under the Dance Tent, while others caught up over music in camping chairs across the field.
About 3,000 people gathered in Trumansburg for Donna The Buffalo’s GrassRoots Festival Weekend this time over three days on just two concert stages, a smaller version of the annual event that normally attracts about 15,000 festival-goers for a four-day celebration filled with art and music. The festival follows a series of one-night concerts throughout July, as organizers spread out the performances that normally unfold over a single weekend.
