O2-Virgin Media boss faces biggest battle of his career
Lutz Schuler’s task to combine the two companies and deliver billions in cost savings will mean job cuts and huge technical challenges

Virgin Media boss Lutz Schuler is getting used to winning. Downloads on his fibre broadband network hit a record high on March 31 as gamers feasted on the latest update to Call of Duty: Warzone, the first-person shooter played by 80m people.
Such demand came just days before he survived two skirmishes of his own.
In early April, Schuler emerged victorious from a tussle with O2 chief Mark Evans to become the leader of Virgin Media and the mobile network following their £31bn mega merger. A second triumph followed last week, when the competition watchdog provisionally backed the deal, batting away concerns that it would affect service quality and increase prices.
Comcast and its entertainment unit NBCUniversal report fourth-quarter and 2020 results.
NBCUniversal streaming service Peacock has reached 33 million sign-ups, parent company Comcast said on Thursday in its latest earnings update.
NBCUniversal CEO Jeff Shell had told an investor conference in early December that streamer Peacock had exceeded 26 million sign-ups at that time. Comcast had in its previous quarterly earnings report mentioned nearly 22 million sign-ups. Peacock has had an exceptional start, exceeding all internal targets, Comcast chairman and CEO Brian Roberts said on the earnings conference call. Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York, knows a little something about royalty and romance and she’s bringing that expertise to the page with her debut novel, “Her Heart for a Compass.”
Ferguson announced the news, posting a video message to fans early Wednesday, dressed in period costume and teasing the book’s premise, which is based on the life of her great-great-aunt Lady Margaret Montagu Douglas Scott.
Already a prolific author of children’s books, biographies about Queen Victoria and two memoirs, Ferguson is dipping her Montegrappa writing pen into the world of historical fiction with the book. Set to debut in on Aug. 3, 2021, “Her Heart for a Compass” will be published by romantic fiction leader Mills & Boon in the U.K. and William Morrow in the U.S., both HarperCollins.
