He later applied for the job of theater doorman, because he wanted to meet her.
Richard Paden got the job.
It was 1973.
They started dating and married in 1977.
The Empress closed many years ago, but the Padens continue to be movie fans.
âWe still love going to movies,â the Rev. Cheryl Paden said. âOne of the things we probably missed the most in COVID was going to the theater. Before COVID, it was not unusual for us to go two or three times a month and see all the new movies coming out.â
On Saturday, the Padens were back at the Empress Theatre â this time for an open house, which featured Star Wars characters and free food amid the backdrop of historical perspective.
As a young businessman, Curt Goracke saw the value of preserving a downtown landmark.
Now, the owner of Touch of Class Hair Studio will sell the former Empress Theater to The Digg Site Productions, which is planning a $2.4 million renovation/restoration project for the Main Street building.
Goracke started Touch of Class in 1977.
About 7 ½ years later, Goracke opted to relocate from a rented space to a building he would own.
Two buildings were available at that time, he said.
One was the Empress Theater at $48,500 and the other was a jewelry store on Main Street. Goracke said that building was for sale for $54,000.
