Everyone seems to be binging on documentaries about real-life horror stories. But did you know that Northeast Ohio has been home to many serial killers?
In the latest motion, Arrick said the application to reopen Grate s case will be filed March 30. The appointment of counsel for the application to reopen is currently contingent upon this court determining that there is a genuine issue as to whether the applicant was deprived of the effective assistance of counsel on appeal, Arrick said in the motion. There can be no equal justice where the kind of trial a man gets depends on the amount of money he has, Arrick added.
An attorney other than those handling original direct appeals is appointed so claims of ineffective assistance of appellate counsel can be included in the application, said Ashland County Prosecutor Christopher Tunnell.
ASHLAND On Thursday, the Ohio Supreme Court unanimously upheld the conviction and death sentence for Shawn Grate in the murder of two Ashland women.Â
Grate, convicted of killing five women in Ashland and elsewhere, was sentenced in 2018 to death and a minimum of 90 years to life in prison for the local murders of Stacey Stanley and Elizabeth Griffith.
He was later additionally sentenced to life in prison without parole in Richland County for the murders of two Mansfield women and again in Marion County for the murder of a Louisiana woman.
Thursday s decision was a result of an automatic, direct appeal to the Ohio Supreme Court. These appeals triggered in the wake of any death sentence. Â

Ohio high court says defense counsel erred but not to reversible level
ASHLAND - The Ohio Supreme Court on Thursday unanimously affirmed the convictions and death sentence for Shawn Grate in the murder of two women in Ashland County.
Grate, who murdered at least five women in three Ohio counties, was convicted in 2018 of killing Stacey Stanley, 43, and Elizabeth Griffith, 29, after a lengthy jury trial in Ashland County Common Pleas Court.
The jury recommended the death penalty for Grate, and Judge Ron Forsthoefel agreed.
Grate s one-man crime spree ended after he kidnapped a woman prosecutors identified as Jane Doe. Grate raped her multiple times, but she managed to escape after calling 911 with Grate s phone on Sept. 13, 2016.
