Pop Rockets vocalist Rebecca Shaner sees this summer s 8 Great Tuesdays as both validation for her Erie band and a reminder for local music lovers.
She said that being chosen as the headliner for the first ErieBank 8 Great Tuesdays concert of 2021 signifies that The Pop Rockets has made it in our town.
And it also lets the community know that when those big bands aren t around, we re here to entertain you and we have a blast doing it, Shaner said.
The Pop Rockets is one of four local bands, or those from western Pennsylvania, selected as headliners for this year s 8 Great Tuesday concerts, which start next Tuesday and run weekly through Aug. 24 at Liberty Park. The Erie-Western Pennsylvania Port Authority, which puts on the concert series, also chose local bands for all eight opening acts. In 2020, the 8 Great Tuesday concerts were canceled due to COVID-19.
Curtis Waidley grew up in Erie, experiencing nature in nearby Presque Isle State Park and on family camping trips. But it wasn t until he was in college that he set foot in a national park. It s so cliche to say the place took my breath away, Waidley, 24, said about his 2018 visit to Badlands National Park in South Dakota. But that was what it was like. I just stopped and it took my breath away. . I ve had the same sensation with every national park I ve visited.
Waidley, who has now been to more than 20 national parks, features them and one Pennsylvania state park – Presque Isle – in the Save America Print Series of posters he created. He donates 10% of his sales to the National Park Foundation, a nonprofit that generates private donations for the National Park Service.
