Three residents spoke out in support of Constable Dan Valentine at the Board of Trustees meeting Tuesday, saying he’s needed in the township.
Tami Dennison indicated she wanted to show her support after seeing the negative comments made last month by a resident criticizing trustees for reinstating Valentine following a criminal case against him.
“We need him here. He’s done so much good for the community. If they knew him, they’d know that,” she said, referring to Ed and Dean Farmer, who also attended the meeting. “We really need him.”
Ed Farmer had questioned trustees at the last meeting and again questioned them at this meeting regarding Valentine, along with Dean Farmer, who made known his displeasure with the reinstatement.

FRANKLIN SQUARE Salem Township resident Ed Farmer criticized trustees Tuesday about the reinstatement of Constable Dan Valentine after his recent court case, saying “his reputation is compromised.”
“Is there a certain amount you’re allowed to steal that you keep your job?” Farmer asked during the trustees’ meeting.
Valentine was charged with theft, a first-degree misdemeanor, after being accused of pocketing five mini bottles of liquor at the Wine Connection in Columbiana in October. After being contacted by Columbiana police, he returned the bottles and tried to make restitution, telling the officer he just forgot to pay. He had purchased a case of beer, but didn’t pay for the mini bottles.
ESOPUS, N.Y. â The state has granted the town $430,200 toward $561,100 in costs for culvert repairs on Dashville Road and Hardenburg Road.Â
The projects were discussed during a meeting last week, with Supervisor Shannon Harris saying after the session that the town s share of project costs will be covered by the use of Highway Department equipment and crews.
âThese two culverts . represent both an inconvenience in terms of community flooding as well as a habitat impediment,â she said.

FRANKLIN SQUARE Salem Township Constable Dan Valentine is back on the job.
Trustees voted Thursday to reinstate him immediately after a brief special meeting. He had been on paid administrative leave since Nov. 12 in response to his Oct. 25 arrest for theft at a liquor store in Columbiana.
Last Friday, he pleaded guilty in Mahoning County Court in Canfield to an amended charge of disorderly conduct, which is a minor misdemeanor, and paid a fine of $100.
Trustee Chair Bill Heston said after talking with legal counsel, “I don’t see any reason why we can’t reinstate Mr. Valentine at this time. We’ve had several letters of support.”
