Founders of Keep Kids Off the Streets receive $700 heat press to create T-shirts Gardner News GARDNER A local family that established an organization aimed at breaking the stereotype of skateboarding kids as troublemakers is being recognized for their efforts. Eddie Vargas Sr. and Eddie Vargas Jr., who created the Keep Kids Off the Streets nonprofit six years ago, were among five recipients nationwide of the Stahl Family Small Business Fund Pure Imagination Scholarship, which is dedicated to helping small businesses grow by giving them extra tools and training they need to take their operation to the next level. Vargas Sr. said his organization includes a group of teens from Gardner and Fitchburg who travel year-round to different skate parks across the state and encourage local skateboarders to keep away from drugs and remain in school. He said the idea for the nonprofit came to him after he purchased skateboards for his two sons, Eddie Jr. and Joshua.

Port of Longview beats revenue projections in ’20 despite pandemic By Marissa Heffernan, The Daily News, Longview Published: February 25, 2021, 7:33pm Share: LONGVIEW The Port of Longview had a good year despite the COVID-19 pandemic, with an $8.8 million net gain from operations through December, about $5.5 million higher than budgeted. “We had a strong close last year, which we are delighted to see,” Port CEO Dan Stahl said. The port had a better 2020 than 2019, with $1.3 million more in revenue. The budget was presented at Wednesday’s board of commissioners meeting by Chief Administrative and Financial Officer Jennifer Brown. The port budgeted $36.2 million in revenue for 2020, but ended up coming in 14 percent higher with $41.4 million. Expenses were slightly under budget, too: The port had planned for $32.9 million in expenses and spent just $32.6 million.
