<p>The curtain has fallen on competition at the 2022 <a class='ath autolink' href='https://theathletic.com/olympics/'>Olympics</a> as the flame was extinguished Sunday at the closing ceremony in Beijing. The United States finished fifth in the overall medal count with 25 medals, including eight gold, just behind Canada (26 total, 4 gold). </p><p></p><p>Norway topped the standings, capturing 37 medals with 16 gold. The team from Russia was second with 32 but only six gold. Germany was third with 27 medals, 12 of which were gold. Host China finished 11th overall but was third in the gold medal tally with nine. </p><p></p><p>The Olympic flag has been passed along to Italy, which will host the next Winter Games in 2026.</p><p></p><p>NBC will show tape-delayed coverage of the closing ceremony at 8 p.m.</p><p></p><p><strong>Hailey Salvian:</strong>
