Daniel Prude s Family Members Argue Body Camera Footage Is Proof Of Crime

Font Size: The family of Daniel Prude, who died after he stopped breathing while restrained by police, said Wednesday that footage from body-worn cameras is proof that officers committed a crime. Daniel’s brother, Joe Prude, said the videos are indisputable proof that the Rochester police committed a crime after a grand jury declined to recommend criminal charges against the officers involved, the Associated Press reported Thursday. Daniel died after officers pressed his head into the pavement and immobilized him after he ran from Joe’s home while under the influence of PCP. Daniel said “they’re trying to kill me,” body camera video shows, the AP reported. “And they ended up killing him,” Joe said, according to The AP.

In a decision announced Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2021, a grand jury voted not to charge officers shown on body camera video holding Daniel Prude down naked and handcuffed on a city street last winter until he stopped breathing. His brother Joe Prude said Wednesday, Feb. 24 he had viewed police body camera footage showing what happened after officers caught up with Daniel Prude, naked on a frigid March night, as irrefutable proof of a crime. Arrests Made at Daniel Prude Protests in Brooklyn, as Family Angered Over No Charges for Officers

Attorneys for the seven police officers applauded a grand jury’s decision Tuesday not to charge them, and insisted the videos are only evidence of the officers doing their jobs correctly. “Murder, manslaughter, something,” is what Joe Prude said he wanted to hear from Attorney General Letitia James nearly a year after his brother died following the fatal encounter with police. Daniel Prude, who was visiting from Chicago, had irrationally bolted from his brother’s home, under the influence of PCP, and it was Joe Prude who called police asking for their help. “How are you the attorney general and there’s still no charges brought up?” Prude said he recalled thinking as he watched James’ announcement Tuesday, livestreamed from Rochester’s Aenon Missionary Baptist Church, not far from where Daniel Prude died.
