Spokane Valley Fire Department to donate retired fire engine to City of Malden

KXLY May 5, 2021 9:52 AM Olivia Roberts Updated: Copyright 4 News Now SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. The Spokane Valley Fire Department donated one its fire engines to the city of Malden. The local department donated its 1999 Pierce Engine during a ceremony Wednesday afternoon. Malden and neighboring town Pine City were destroyed by a fast-moving wildfire in September 2020, destroying homes, businesses, the towns’ fire station and fire engine. “We are very excited to be able to help out the City of Malden,” Spokane Valley Fire Department Chief Bryan Collins said in a release. “As we go into warmer temperatures and wildfire season, this fire engine will be a valuable asset for the City of Malden.”

The town of Malden spent the last six months cleaning and rebuilding from a devastating fire that wiped out 80 percent of its buildings in early September. One of the biggest concerns right now is assisting people into houses before next winter, said Malden Mayor Dan Harwood. Living in an RV all winter has taken its toll on some of the community members who have larger families. “It’s a very serious problem because you live in an RV all winter, and that’s not much space,” he said. “If you’re by yourself, that’s one thing. But if you’ve got a couple of dogs and a couple of kids, those walls get pretty closed in quick.”
