Face Down RTÉ One, 9.35pm David Blake Knox and David Gregg’s fine documentary explores one of The Troubles’ most shameful episodes, using the testimony of relatives, combatants and investigators to recreate the botched kidnapping of German businessman Thomas Niedermayer by the IRA. In the 1960s, Niedermayer had come to Belfast with his family to manage a new Grundig electronics plant. Niedermayer’s factory was robustly non-sectarian, and he was, by all accounts, a popular employer: he lived with his wife and two daughters openly and without protection in a suburb of west Belfast. Big mistake, as it turned out.
