A dollar down
Woody Guthrie wrote a very poignant song about debt called “A Dollar Down and a Dollar a Week.” This song has been recorded in many variants and my most-favorite lyric was, “You can seek whatever you want for a dollar down and a dollar a week.” The lesson taught in these lyrics is that when you go into debt there is a very high price paid to get out of debt.
Our country is facing a “debt bomb” with all of the so-called stimulus spending money that is being borrowed. So to all of you who think they are getting free money in your next stimulus check, look at it as a dollar down and a dollar a week for the rest of your life. Then realize that your children and grandchildren will still be paying off the debt long after you have spent the money.
U.S. Airman Curtis knew from an early age he wanted to enlist in the military.
Curtis says, “I came from a military family. I have a lot of relatives who served. It was just the clear path that I was going to follow.”
Curtis’s military career path changed significantly when he was screened to become an officer and accepted into the Air Force Officer Training Academy. His wife Chelsey was thrilled.
Chelsey says, “It makes me very proud to be able to support him. It was just really exciting for us.”
Curtis would be gone for two months. Then report directly to his new duty station in California, leaving Chelsey to drive the 15-hundred-mile journey alone with the baby to meet Curtis. They decided to fly Chelsey and the baby and pay someone to drive their car out to California. The plan was expensive but worth it. However, their finances took another hit when their car broke down half way across the country and had to be towed to California.
The Northern Virginia Association of Realtors (NVAR) began wrapping up a decidedly unconventional but surprisingly strong year in local real estate with the installation of new officers and presentation of awards on Dec. 17.
Like almost everything for the past months, the event was held âvirtuallyâ while focusing on issues of importance to the 12,000-plus Realtors working in the Northern Virginia region.
Derrick Swaak, partner and managing broker of TTR Sothebyâs International Realty in McLean, was sworn in as the organizationâs president for its centennial year. He takes over from Nicholas Lagos of Century 21 New Millennium, who remains on the board of directors as past chairman
