Concha Contreras of Mesquite is turning 100 on May 29, 2021.
Contreras has been a lifelong resident of Mesquite excluding being born in Carlsbad and a few years spent in Colorado as a little girl though traveling was a constant during her careers with Western Union and the U.S. Postal Service.
Contreras was born the fourth of 10 children. After high school, Contreras “broke tradition” and started working for Western Union rather than get married. The telecommunication company sent her to cities like St. Louis, Chicago, New York and Los Angeles for trainings.
Later, she married Roberto Aguilar, her next-door neighbor in Mesquite, and had two children, Dan Aguilar and Yolanda Young. Contreras subsequently started working for the U.S. Post Office as the Mesquite postmistress. Close to 31 of her years were spent at the post office, with travels to Hawaii, Puerto Rico, British Colombia, Washington D.C. and other locations during that time.
