The leading candidates for the next CEO of NHS England

By Alastair McLellan2021-04-29T13:44:00+01:00 The list of those who could replace Simon Stevens as NHS England chief executive is long, however relatively few are likely to be considered serious contenders. HSJ presents here the runner and riders for what has been described as the ‘fourth most powerful job’ in the UK (after the PM, chancellor and the governor of the Bank of England). The front-runners Amanda Pritchard, chief operating officer, NHS England Why: Has made a good fist of the number two job at NHSE before and during the pandemic and is considered to be in ‘pole position’ for the post. The trust, which runs Mile End Hospital in Mile End, Newham University Hospital in Plaistow and the Royal London in Whitechapel, cancelled routine planned operations in late December and staff were redeployed to critical care units as the Covid-19 crisis escalated in the capital.

The Covid wards now come with a royal title - Credit: Barts NHS Use of a royal name is at the personal discretion of the Sovereign, who is also patron of the Royal London. The recognition for the critical care unit has delighted the hospital’s NHS trust chief.
