there s been significant development of the exurbs, if you will, to the north. how much development has it hit through the dallas-ft. worth area? i can say our city has grown by about 75% in about that time, so today our population is 37,000, where the last time we dealt with storms like this, it was closer to 20,000. so she s right about that. mr. mayor, thank you for the time and all the best in your efforts to help your community navigate what will obviously be, at its best, very disruptive, and at its worst, a tragedy. we are tracking the latest on an incredible series of thunderstorms that have been pounding the fourth largest urban area in america. we are also, however, tracking politics. today is another primary day.
told to take shelter now at the airport. hopefully we can get somebody from the airport. that is where the american airlines hub. that airport is near arlington. for poichb reference, the dallas cowboys stadium is located there. this is a short drive, 15 maybe less minutes from the dallas-ft. worth airport. to give you perspective on all of this, this is a great portion of north texas right now under a tornado watch. we re naming many counties that you perhaps have never heard of before. all of these counties are in north texas. known as the dallas-ft. worth metroplex. commonly referred to as such with several tornadoes on the ground. so far we ve not heard of any fatalities but we have seen video come in. a great amount of damage to homes, to businesses, as well.
arlington. so it s right in the middle of the metroplex, and there is this line of storms that is now coming through. now, it s not uncommon to get little spin-ups with a more ordinary line of storms. oftentimes there is sheer right along the leading edge of those lines, and that will develop a little spin. what we are not seeing in downtown dallas right now is a very well-developed super cell storm of the type that pro dudu those more long track tornadoes, the ones we saw on the south side of dallas that must have lasted about 25 minutes as it traveled up into the dallas area. and those types of storms are now moving away and off into the northeast part of the state. we ve got this last line, and we can t rule out more tornadoes, but it does appear the threat is gradually beginning to diminish across the dallas-ft. worth area. all right. thank you, carl. as we turn our attention to reed t timmer, who is a storm chaser with the discovery channel, he is actually upstream, if you
85 and sunny just last week. so i-25 there s been some snow near colorado springs down to pueblo. the warm side of the storm and some big thunderstorms this morning. wichita falls got nailed earlier. now just south of oklahoma city. if you are traveling near i-35 in between dallas, fort worth and oklahoma city, that s probably the worst drive. late this afternoon, more thunderstorms. we re kinding in a stormy weather pattern. the typical late afternoon storms. the ohio valley, indianapolis, columbus, all of indiana, ohio, northern kentucky. and then once again, dallas-ft. worth, austin and san antonio. you ll be dodging some strong storms late today. i don t think too many tornadoes. that s good. as far as the forecast goes, it s a cold start in new england. beautiful afternoon. temperatures 65 in new york. that s more like it. d.c. a chance at 70 today. southeast looks okay today. but tomorrow we re going to increase your rain threat. also kind of rainy and stormy out in the northwest
there is a difference between south dallas and south of dallas. so we re understanding that it is south of dallas. a tornado, a possible tornado on the ground south of dallas. this is video from johnson county, right outside of ft. worth, texas. in fact, i ll have to be honest with you. i am getting text messages from family members in the area right now and they are telling me that they are preparing, if they need to, to get into safe spots within their homes. and perhaps hunkering down. we ve seen some extremely volatile weather in the midwest and the south, as you well know, which we ve covered on many of these being fatal tornadoes ripping through parts of the midwest and the south. so we ll keep you up to date. right now, a possible unconfirmed tornado on the ground, south of dallas, texas. some very ominous video coming in out of johnson county. that s right outside of ft.
