You’d think that after languishing in the Dark Realm for who knows how many years, Dracula would need at least a few hours to get reacquainted with the human body before jumping back into perpetrating unholy acts. Not so. She gets right to work preparing for the vampire hunters’ imminent arrival.
Out in the forest, those vampire hunters are taking a beat to go over war plans. Jack insists that defeating Dracula is going to require every weapon in their arsenal including the use of Bathory’s mother’s scrolls. On these scrolls are incantations authored by the first person ever to summon The Dark One, making them the nuclear bomb of human-vampire negotiations.

In the final moments of last week s episode, Past Tense, Jack (Nicole Muñoz) had risked life, limb, and the linearity of history to assassinate Olivia von Dracula (Tricia Helfer) at the town fair before the latter could be transformed into The Dark One. Say what you will of Jack, but she does not waste any time.
Unfortunately, neither do the citizens of Abel, who hang Jack by the neck until death without due process under the law (obviously the concept is still some years away). In any other show, such fatal acts often signal the abrupt end of a character s arc. Not so in

It s fitting that in the final season of this epic, globe-trotting, time-jumping series we actually kick things off with a kind of origin story. Though true to
Van Helsing form, this one is as unconventional as the show.
It starts with Jack in a coffin in the Dark Realm, as one often is when trapped there by The Dark One. Upon waking, Jack finds before her a swirling portal in time that s been opened up by Vanessa (Kelly Overton). The thinking is: If Jack can figure out a way to vanquish The Dark One in the past, the Van Helsings might not have to deal with her in the present.
